Letting go, looking good, holding on.” While that happens to be the title of our center spread about Greek dancing, that phrase really sums up my feelings about this entire issue.

Parents and grandparents raise their families as best as they can so someday they can “let go” and allow their children to embark on their own journey. Though they’ve “let go,” parents continue to pray for their children to “hold on” to the family and cultural traditions of their childhood—as well as to add new ones as they grow with their new families.
This issue is dedicated to stories of preserving our Greek traditions through music, dance, cooking, games, religion, holiday celebrations and language.
The home of my maternal great yiayia and my aunt Estelle Kanakis, who dedicated her life to the Greek community and preserving our Greek identity, was a home where we annually celebrated Easter and New Year’s Day.

Years later, I realized their home was the foundation for my love of our Greek heritage and my underlying “spark” to want to continue preserving our cultural identity. I wanted to honor them both by picturing them on the cover of this issue (see the black and white photo), as I know they would be so proud of our efforts at GreekCircle. So as we grow up and “let go”—let’s remember to always “hold on” to those special family traditions as well as  celebrate new ones as our families grow.
Merry Christmas!
